Plymouth Security Partnership
A £7million Plymouth City Council security contract has been split between four West Country firms as the authority tries to bolster the local economy.
Three of the four firms landing the contract are in Plymouth, the other has a base in Exeter.
The companies are Estover's Securi Guard Ltd, R, Lipson's Pathfinder Security Ltd, Union Street-based Security Management South West Ltd and Reliance Security Ltd.
They have each signed five-year contracts, worth around £7million, to provide security staff for public safety at major events and to monitor CCTV cameras around the city.
They will also check on schools, car parks and other public buildings.
The council said the job is too huge for just one company, so the authority and its providers have formed the Plymouth Security Partnership, which will act as a 'super security team' working together.
"It's like having our own bodyguard for the city," said council leader Vivien Pengelly.
"It's comforting to know we have experienced, knowledgeable people helping to keep our city safe.
"This is another fantastic example of how the council is supporting the local economy by awarding long-term contracts to local businesses.
"As we carry out strict tendering for new contracts, we still ensure we get the best value for money for taxpayers and boost local trade at the same time. It's win-win."
The Partnership's aim is to "provide quality security services with the highest possible degree of excellence, based upon the principles of fairness, integrity, honesty and respect".
Ken York, of Plymouth Security Management South West, said: "We'll work closely with the blue light services to address crime and the perception of crime.
"The overall aim of the Partnership is to provide Plymouth with a secure and safe environment."
Scott Boyd, Secrui-Guard's operations managing director, said: "The Partnership will enable us to provide a more focused and enhanced service.
"It will build on the high level of commitment to quality and professionalism we've always brought to our work."
Pathfinder Security Services has provided security for events during the past six years including the annual British Fireworks Championships. Operations director Ken Gordon said: "It's not about providing 'hired muscle' – we offer an intelligent service.
"Our employees are highly trained for every eventuality, but we're there to prevent problems as much as deal with them. Working closely with other parties is crucial."
Sarah Bates, of Reliance Security, said: "We're delighted to be part of the Partnership and look forward to providing professional and efficient security."
The council pledges to work with local companies to help them better understand the council's needs and the tendering process.
All council contracts over £75,000 must be placed in the public domain.
